Bald is Better
After spending over half my life with a flat-top or high and tight style haircut, I made the decision about 2 years ago to go completely bald. Now let me just state for the record, that I didn't make the decision because I was going the way of Captain Picard (a reverse high and tight). On the other hand, let me also state for the record that I fully realize that my hairline is steadily marching backwards across my skull. So I'm somewhere in the middle regarding my locks - not balding, but not Fabio, either.
At first I did the Marine Corps boot camp style haircut by running the clippers across my 100% of my skull real estate. Then one day in the shower I went a little nuts with the shaving cream and the razor and voila! Mr. Clean at your service! When you reach this point, many things are running through your head. Unlike the time when you started shaving your neck and ended up with a Bruce Lee style shine, you can't hide the fact that the only hair on your head are your eyebrows and those tree trunks that mysteriously appear in your nostrils. You're stuck.
The good news is that if you don't like it, you will have a summer buzz cut in approximately one week and a high and tight in two. Of course, every guy over 29 is going to wonder almost immediately whether or not the hair will actually grow back. It will.
A common rookie mistake that some folks make is to go for the skull shine directly from a wavy set of locks. This is a HUGE mistake! You may not realize it, but your hair provides a pretty thick (in most cases) layer of solar protection for your skull. If you go from zero to sixty in one shave session, you're likely to end up with a pasty, nasty cue ball look. Trust me, there's nothing nastier than a skull that hasn't seen sunlight in 20 or 30 years.
Another mistake is commonly committed when folks take the plunge in late Fall or in the dead of Winter. Unless you're going to a tanning bed, you will be stuck with the cue ball look for several months.
Tune in next time when I share exactly how "Bald is Better" and how the shine has changed my life!
